Coaching: Questions to Ask

Use a Coaching Mindset can be a great way to have more meaningful conversations when you are doing someone’s appraisal or end of year review (or even just a check-in).

When you are doing an appraisal there are a number of key things that you will want to focus on:

  • Explore their contribution and progress over the past year;
  • Find out more about how they have developed and what they have learned;
  • obtain feedback.

Here are some example Coaching Questions that you might like to use in an Appraisal Conversation.

Exploring Contribution and their progress…

  • How do you think it is going?
  • How do you think the past year has gone?
  • What do you think has gone well?
  • When you reflect of the past year, what have been the highlights?
  • What has been your greatest achievement?
  • Are there any areas that you feel you are struggling in?
  • What has been the most difficult/challenging thing?
  • What do you enjoy the most about your role?
  • What frustrates you the most and why?
  • Tell me about an experience where things have gone well.
  • Tell me about an experience where it didn’t go well.
  • Tell me about an experience where it went wrong and what you learned from that. What would you do differently next time?

Find out about how they have developed and what they have learned…

  • Think back on your last 3 pieces of work. What is one thing you would do differently?
  • What have been your greatest learning points this year?
  • What aspirations do you have for your Career?
  • What do you think you need to work on to achieve that?
  • How can I help you with this?
  • What motivates you at work?
  • What excites you most at work?
  • What skills/strengths do you use the most?
  • What skills/strengths are not used often enough?
  • Where do you think you need to focus in the coming months?
  • What skills could be developed to help you achieve your objectives?
  • Are their skills or knowledge areas that you would like to deelop to help you be more effective or to develop your career?
  • What steps do you take to manage your wellbeing?

Obtain feedback…

  • Is there anything preventing you from doing your job as well as you would like?
  • Do you get the support you need?
  • Are there any areas where you feel you can be better supported?
  • What one thing could I do better to support you?
  • Do you understand what the teams objectives are?
  • Do you understand what your role is?
  • What else could we do better?
