H is for… Habits

Habits can be small and basic, but when you do them every day they compound over time.

It is important to have a think about your routine and habits. You should be looking to promote good habits (and seeking to stop any bad habits that might hinder your promotion prospects). Here are some “bad” habits that you should watch out for:

  • How you dress. Dress professionally/in accordance with the dress code/ for the role you want. Take pride in your appearance.
  • Don’t shift the blame for mistakes. Step up and take responsibility for your own mistakes and take responsibility for the people you supervise.
  • Don’t moan/complain (all the time). No one likes being around a complainer (even if they agree with the complaints.) Don’t point out everything that is wrong with other people’s suggestions. Give constructive feedback and solutions instead.
  • Don’t coast. Be enthusiastic and engaged with your job. Don’t expect others to carry the load. Add value. Be a team player.
