G is for… Goals

G is for… Goals (Draft Goals)

As well as reviewing your performance over the previous year, appraisals are also when your boss will seek to agree goals or objectives with you for the upcoming year. However, you will not want to rest on your laurels. You should be thinking about you want you want to achieve on a personal level to put appropriate goals forward (and get your company’s support for goals that work for you personally).

Don’t wait for you boss to just tell you what he wants you to do. Take a pro-active approach.

You will of course be expected to meet your company’s goals, but you should also be able to come up with some possible goals taking into account your job descriptions and the competency framework in place that will keep both you and your boss/company happy.  You might want to look for opportunities to expand your duties, broaden your knowledge, or take on more responsibility.

At your appraisal meeting you can then review and refine these goals as part of the discussion with your boss. If necessary it is also an opportunity to push boundaries with your boss to help you work out what is acceptable.
