C is for… Conversation

Have you told your boss that you are interested in a promotion? It is easy to get passed over for a promotion because you didn’t expressly ask for it! Have a direct conversation with your boss at your pre-appraisal check-in (or another appropriate meeting) about promotion prospects and find out what you need to do to get one. Be direct.

We recommend that you keep a record of your conversation and any feedback given. We use our Career Progression Goals & Meetings Notebook for this purpose. You can also use your career journal and prompts to help you note questions that you might like to ask and to keep a record of any feedback.

Action Point: Have a direct conversation with your boss about a promotion.

This blog post is an extract from our upcoming book Prompt: 52 Prompts for Getting a Promotion Using Your Career Journal” which is being published later this year. You can pre-order your copy.
